The Accountant Financial Services is responsible for financial and management accounting aspects of Council’s Finance operations, including ensuring all day to day financial records are captured and reported accurately in a timely manner. They contribute to the successful achievement of the Unit’s corporate objective by providing accounting and analytical support.

 

Key activities of this role include: 

  • Contribute to the successful achievement of the Unit’s corporate objective by providing accounting and analytical support
  • Process complex payroll journals, standard costs allocations and other adhoc journals; Assist in upholding the integrity of data within the Finance systems.
  • Identify opportunity to improve processes and systems, relevant to the responsibilities of the role.
  • As directed assist the team in preparing monthly general ledger reconciliations, investigate and remediate gaps in accounting processes in a timely manner;

Essential Criteria:

  • Degree qualifications in Finance or Accounting, or related field OR demonstrated solid contemporary experience in a similar role, combined with ongoing professional development;
  • Demonstrated experience in a similar role working in a large organisation using complex integrated financial systems e.g. Oracle, Civica or equivalent and extensive experience using Microsoft Excel at an advanced level;
  • Considerable experience, knowledge and understanding of the legislative and reporting framework for Local Government which includes but is not limited to Australian Accounting Standards, Local Government Act 1993, Local Government (General) Regulation 2005, Local Government Code of Accounting Practice and Financial Reporting, OLG Guidelines, Ministers Orders and Circulars, Public Finance and Audit Act 1983, Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and Water Management Act 2000;
  • Considerable experience in delivering timely and accurate financial reporting, variance analysis, investigations, recommendations and sustainable solutions for the organisation;
  • High level capacity to plan and prioritise, time manage, organise workloads and demonstrate ownership and accountability for own work performance in order to meet changing priorities, organisation goals and legislative timeframes.

 

Desirable Criteria:

  • Membership of or equivalent qualifications for membership of the Australian Society of Certified Practicing Accountants (CPA), or the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA).

PLEASE NOTE: The Local Government Act 1993 provides that an employee may be moved from their former position to a new position in the new organisational structure provided that the new position has 'substantially the same duties' as the former position.

In determining what constitutes 'substantially the same duties' consideration will be given to the following factors, with an alignment of at least 80% required to the new role for it to be deemed a lateral transfer opportunity.
